Citations in AI Overviews: how to become a Google source

A page earns a citation in AI Overviews if it is indexed, can be displayed with a snippet in Google’s search results, and contains a brief, self-contained answer to the user’s question. Google has no specific technical requirements for AI Overviews, nor is there a special schema.org mark-up tag to enable them. The choice of source is determined by the content: the answer at the start of the section, specific facts, conditions and a credible author. Ranking alone is not enough: in an Ahrefs study from March 2026, only 38% of the pages cited in AI Overviews were also in the top ten results.

Citations in AI Overviews: several source pages linked to the AI’s response, one of which is highlighted as the cited source with a link

Below, we explain how citation works, what Google expects, and how to restructure your content step by step.

What is a citation in AI Overviews?

Ogólną definicję pojęcia znajdziesz w haśle citation in our dictionary.

Citation is one of the three thresholds we describe in brand visibility in AI. The lower threshold is reference, i.e. the brand name mentioned in the response without a link. A higher rating indicates a recommendation, where the AI explicitly recommends the brand as a solution. The website may be cited as a source of information, whilst the brand may still not be recommended, as we explain in the text Knows the brand, but doesn’t recommend it.

PRESENCE IN AI RESPONSES
Mention, quotation, recommendation
Each threshold demands something different from the website and the brand.
THRESHOLD 1
mentionThe AI mentions the brand name in its response, but does not provide a link to the website.
WHAT IS REQUIREDThe brand must be recognised from a variety of online sources.
THRESHOLD 2subject of the text
CitationThe page is listed as a source with a link in the AI summary.
WHAT IS REQUIREDA brief, standalone answer on the page that can be quoted.
THRESHOLD 3
RecommendationAI recommends the brand as a solution to the user’s problem.
WHAT IS REQUIREDCitations and references in independent sources.
Mentioning a website does not automatically imply an endorsement of the brand.

Is a high ranking on Google enough to feature in AI Overviews?

No. Ranking increases the chances, but does not guarantee them. In Ahrefs’ first study from July 2025, 76% of the pages cited in AI Overviews appeared in the top ten results. In the follow-up study from March 2026, after AI Overviews switched to the Gemini 3 model, this proportion fell to around 38%. The methodologies of the two studies differ, so this isn’t a clear-cut trend, but the direction is clear: Google is increasingly drawing on sources outside the top rankings.

For the website owner, this is both good and bad news. The good news is that a page ranked 15th can become a source if it provides a better answer. The bad news is that a page ranked 1st may lose clicks to a summary in which it does not appear. We discuss this relationship in more detail in the article Visibility in AI versus SEO: is a high Google ranking enough?, and the differences between the approaches are described on the website SEO vs GEO vs AEO.

How much traffic does a citation in AI Overviews generate?

Fewer clicks than the standard result, but not zero. The Pew Research Centre analysed 68,879 searches carried out by 900 adult users in the US. When an AI summary appeared, people clicked on the traditional result in 8% of visits, and without the summary in 15%. They clicked on the source links within the summary itself in around 1% of visits.

Google, for its part, emphasises that clicks from AI Overviews are more valuable because the user arrives with context and spends more time on the page. That is why it is worth measuring brand exposure not only by clicks, but also by enquiries and sales. It also matters that the brand appears in the first answer the user reads, even if they do not click on it.

What does Google require of a website cited in AI Overviews?

The same as for any result with a snippet. The Google Search Central documentation states clearly: for a page to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, it must be indexed and eligible to appear in search results with a text snippet. There are no additional requirements or special optimisation measures for AI.

  • Googlebot can access the page, and the page returns a 200 status code and does not contain a ‘noindex’ tag.
  • The main content is in HTML, not just in images or scripts that load when clicked.
  • The `nosnippet`, `max-snippet` and `data-nosnippet` attributes also work in AI Overviews. The more you restrict the snippets, the less content Google can display.
  • Structural data is only helpful if it matches what is shown on the page.

In May 2025, Google added a set of guidelines for creators: unique content rather than text that can easily be replaced, a clear and readable website, up-to-date business details in Google My Business and Merchant Centre, and high-quality photos and videos. These are the basics, which we also describe on the website What is SEO?.

How do you write content that AI Overviews quotes?

The idea is that each section should be able to be taken out of the page and still make sense. AI Overviews, just like AI Mode, breaks a question down into a number of sub-queries (Google calls this ‘query fan-out’) and searches for a passage that provides a direct answer to each one. The page that has such a snippet ready wins. In the ebook, we describe this as the C.I.T.E. method – that is, four layers that you go through in sequence on every page you’re working on.

THE C.I.T.E. METHOD.
Four layers of content that can be quoted
Go through them in this order on each page you are working on.
01Clarity: a response to the launchThe first paragraph answers the question posed in the title; the headings are questions; each section has a single main point
02Integrity: reliabilitythe author is clearly identified, along with their experience; the date of the last update; a few reliable sources; and no empty promises
03Text chunks: standalone sectionsEach section has a heading, an answer in 1–2 sentences, a more detailed explanation and an exception
04Evidence: evidence and its limitsexamples, numbers in context, „works if” and „doesn’t work if” conditions”
The highlighted layer usually produces the quickest result, as it changes the first paragraph.
aeloapp.io

It is the first layer that changes the most. The paragraph beginning with „These days, AI is transforming search engines” does not provide AI with anything to quote. The paragraph beginning with ‘response’, ‘condition’ and ‘limit’ can be moved to the summary in its entirety. This is how we structure posts on this blog, as exemplified by the text How to get AI to recommend your company. This approach has a name: AEO, and, more broadly speaking, GEO.

Which parts of the page are most frequently included in the answers?

Those that answer a single specific question in a few sentences. In the e-book, we identify eight formats for such blocks:

  • definition: „what it is” in a single sentence and an explanation in layman’s terms,
  • instructions: steps beginning with a verb and ending with the result,
  • conditions: when something works and when it doesn’t, and what to do instead,
  • a comparison: A or B, with a clear conclusion as to which to choose,
  • selection criteria: what to look for when making a decision,
  • range: how long it takes or how much it costs, and what this depends on,
  • errors and corrections: error, consequence, specific correction,
  • short questions and answers within the text.

You don’t need everything on a single page. All you need is a quick answer, a single block of steps or comparisons, a single block of conditions, and a few questions at the end. Templates in every format, ready to copy, are available in the free e-book below.

How do citations in AI Overviews differ from citations in AI chats?

The source from which the model selects pages. AI Overviews uses Google’s index, so SEO principles are most effective here. AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity search the web using their own tools and have different sets of sources. The same page may be cited by Google but ignored by a chatbot, or vice versa. The selection mechanism is described in the text How AI chatbots choose the brands they recommend.

However, the content that works in both places looks similar: specific facts, figures, standards, prices and the answer right at the start. This can be seen in the case study of the lime manufacturer. Following the redesign of the pages, the number of phrases cited in AI chat responses rose from 50% to 94%, and the brand appeared in 18 out of 18 queries. The process is described in the texts Website citations in AI: the lime producer as a source for every question, An AI model recommends a brand for the first time and From 0 to 17 mentions on AI in five weeks.

The results are also influenced by changes to the models themselves, such as ChatGPT’s transition to a new model, as described in the text GPT-6 in ChatGPT: what it means for brand visibility, and the fact that The AI gives a different answer every time.

How can you check whether Google is indexing your website?

Manually, using a fixed list of questions. Google Search Console includes impressions and clicks from AI Overviews in the Performance report, but does not show them separately. A drop in CTR whilst the position remains similar can sometimes be a sign that an AI summary has appeared above the results. However, you’ll need to check the quote itself in the search results.

  • Select 5–10 questions for which your website already has impressions in Search Console.
  • Type each one into Google and make a note of whether an ‘AI Overview’ appears and which pages are linked to it.
  • Compare the pages cited with your own: do they have the answer at the start, numbers, or a more recent date?.
  • Take the test every week using the same list, as the AI’s answers change.

A fixed list is frozen query set: without it, it’s impossible to compare the measurements. The guide explains how to check AI chats How to check whether AI mentions the brand, and the frequency of measurements is specified on the page How often should visibility be measured?. When there are too many manual measurements, a review will help AI visibility tools.

What shouldn’t you do?

  • Do not add a „special AI schema”. Google states quite clearly that there is no such thing.
  • Do not block sections using the `nosnippet` tag on pages that are intended to be sources.
  • Don’t pad out your text unnecessarily. An answer hidden 12 paragraphs in is less effective than a shorter one.
  • Don’t start with the history of the industry or definitions from an encyclopaedia.
  • Don’t judge the results after just one check, as the AI’s answers change.
  • Don’t just skim through 30 pages. It’s better to go through 5 properly, starting with the ones with the most views.

If the AI cites your competitors rather than your website, look for the reasons in the text Why does AI recommend the competition?. If the replies contain incorrect information about the company, this guide will help AI is providing false information about the company. The effects of the changes take some time to become apparent, as we explain on the website Why do changes take time?.

How does Aelo help you get citations in AI?

Aelo shows whether changes to your website result in citations. We measure whether ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity mention your brand and cite your website, using the same set of questions, separately for each model and alongside competitors in their responses. The measurements are carried out by the module Visibility, and the pages to be redesigned are assigned as tasks to Tickets. The text describes the whole process How Aelo works: measurement, diagnosis and a step-by-step plan, and the method of calculation methodology. You’ll take the first measurement on Free account.

Agencies wishing to include quotations in their proposals can find out more on the website Aelo for agencies and in the lyrics GEO services at an SEO agency and AI Visibility Report for the client. Companies that manage their own websites should take a look at the website Aelo for small businesses.

FAQ

Do you have to pay to be cited in AI Overviews?

No. The links in AI Overviews are selected organically from Google’s index. Adverts may appear alongside the summary, but they do not pay to be included amongst the sources.

Is it possible to exclude your website from AI Overviews?

Yes, to some extent. The nosnippet tag or the data-nosnippet attribute restricts the snippets displayed in search results, including in AI Overviews. However, the page then also loses its snippets in standard search results.

Does AI Overviews only cite major websites?

No. Google also draws on smaller websites if they provide a specific answer to a question. In a 2026 study by Ahrefs, the majority of the cited websites were not among the top ten results.

How soon can you see the effects of restructuring the content?

Usually after a few weeks. Google needs to revisit and crawl the page, and AI responses vary from one search to the next, so the effect is assessed over a series of measurements.

How can I get AI to cite my website?

Start each section with a short, self-contained answer to the question, provide specific facts and details, and ensure the page remains in Google’s index so that it can be displayed with a snippet in the search results. Google has no separate technical requirements or tags for AI Overviews: the content determines which source is selected. AI chatbots are also more likely to mention brands that are described across multiple independent sources, as we discuss in the text When AI doesn’t know your business. Progress can be seen in citation index.
