Visibility in AI without technical knowledge: where to start in a small business
Achieving visibility in AI for a small business does not require technical knowledge. Most of the work involves content rather than code: a description of the business, answers to customer queries, up-to-date data and reviews. Simply start by running a check to see whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity mention your brand at all, and then work through a list of tasks, starting with the simplest ones.

Does a small business need visibility in AI?
Yes, if clients are looking for her services online. More and more people, rather than browsing Google results, are asking chatbots: „which physiotherapist in Gdynia”, „which solar panel company in the Podkarpacie region”, „where to order a wedding cake in Lublin”. The chatbot responds with a few names. If yours isn’t among them, the customer might not find out about you, even if your website ranks highly on Google. We explain why this happens in the article Visibility in AI and SEO.
Small businesses also have an advantage when it comes to visibility in AI. In a niche category or within a single city, competition in AI responses is less intense than at national level, and a few good changes can quickly make a difference to the results.
How can a small business ensure its visibility in AI without any technical knowledge?
Five steps. You’ll complete the first three in a single day; the next two will take a few weeks.
You can complete the first step manually, following the instructions on the website How to find out what AI is saying about your business. Remember these two rules: don’t mention the company name when asking questions, as what matters is whether the chatbot can identify you on its own, and repeat each question a few times, as chatbots respond slightly differently each time.
What should you do if the AI doesn’t recognise the company at all?
Start with the website and company details. A user who is unfamiliar with a brand usually either lacks sufficient information about it or encounters conflicting details: one name on the website, another on Google, and yet another in a directory. We describe the most common causes and their solutions in the text ChatGPT doesn’t know my company. If the model knows the brand but gives incorrect information about it, read the text AI is providing false information about the company.
If an influencer is familiar with a company but recommends others, the problem lies outside the website. Recommendations are built on reviews, comparisons and articles in which the brand appears alongside its competitors. We discuss this in our articles Knows the brand, but doesn’t recommend it and Why does AI recommend the competition?.
What about the technical aspects?
When it comes to visibility on AI for small businesses, there’s less to it than you might think, and most of the work will be done for you by the person managing the site or by a plugin. You just need to know what to ask for.
You can read more about structural data in the entry structured data, and as for whether it is worth adding the llms.txt file, see the text llms.txt in WordPress. We explain how to write content from which chatbots can generate ready-made replies on the page What is AEO?.
What should you expect after the first month?
Initial mentions, rather than immediate recommendations, as a small business’s visibility in AI increases in stages. Changes to the website usually take 2–4 weeks to appear in web search results. Reviews and mentions in other sources take between one month and several months before they result in the model starting to recommend you. Details are available on the website Why do changes take time?.
An example from our measurements: a lime producer from the Łódź region did not appear in any of the 18 queries in June 2026. Following updates to its own website – without adding any new subpages – it appeared in 17 out of 18 questions in July. The full description is in the text From 0 to 17 mentions on AI in five weeks. A second example is a one-person graphic design studio described in the article AI chatbot recommendations after 5 months: the Click Made case: 0% visibility in May, a recommendation from three AI engines in October.
