When AI doesn’t know your business

ChatGPT and others AI chats They are not familiar with your company because they have no way of verifying it. If the only source of information about a company is its own website, the model has a single source; it will, however, list brands mentioned in numerous independent sources. In Ahrefs study as at May 2025, across 75,000 outlets with a presence in AI Overviews the number was most strongly associated with references to the brand online (correlation 0.664), more so than links. This isn’t a penalty or a mistake, just a lack of content. The first steps – business cards, directories and a website that clearly explains what you do – take days.

Reason

Why doesn’t ChatGPT know about my company?

Because a company’s website is the only source of information about it, whereas a brand model relies on information confirmed by numerous independent sources. The model builds its response from whatever information it finds. If a company’s website is the sole source of information about it, there is only one source, and that source is biased. Competitor, which is featured on an industry website, has reviews in directories and appears in rankings; it has over a dozen of them.
When asked to select a category, the model must choose several names. It selects those where the risk of error is lowest, i.e. those confirmed in numerous sources. The website alone won’t be enough, even if it is impeccably written.
It’s a question of the material, not your reputation. Nobody has rejected you. There’s simply nothing there quote.
What does the model see when you ask about your category?

One source is usually your own website. The model treats it as a declaration rather than confirmation. Here is an illustrative example.

Diagnosis

Why doesn’t the AI mention the company?

Most commonly, one of the following four: no mentions outside your own domain; a website that doesn’t clearly state what you do; a saturated category; and a brand that’s too new. Usually, several of these apply at once, but the first reason accounts for the majority of cases.
No mentions outside its own domainThe most commonThe only information available about the company comes from its website. There are no reviews on independent websites, no listings in industry directories and no mentions in publications. The model relies on a single source, namely the company’s own website.
The website doesn’t explicitly state what you doFrequentSlogans instead of specifics, service names Developed in-house; no information on where you work or who you work for. The model is unable to assign companies to a category, which the customer is asking about.
This category is already takenMore difficultIn this highly competitive category, models have their own established favourites with hundreds of mentions. Breaking into this group takes longer and requires signals that cannot be generated by content alone.
The brand is too newNaturalA company that has been in business for several months She simply didn’t have time to leave a trace. There’s no putting that right; you just have to work through that period.
An exception is when a model is familiar with the brand but does not recommend it anyway. This is a separate issue, described in the article known, but not recommended.
Order

Where do you start when AI doesn’t know your business?

Start with business cards and brochures, and a website that clearly explains what you do. These two steps can be completed in a week, and they’re usually what get things off the ground. The next steps are listed from the quickest to the slowest.
01
Business cards and catalogues The simplest and quickest step. Company profile on Maps, in trade directories and on review sites. The model receives its first independent confirmation that the company exists. Time: days · Difficulty: low
02
A website that tells it like it is The names of the services used by the client. The town and the area of operation. Description, who do you work for. Facts rather than slogans. Time: days · Difficulty: low
03
Customer reviews Ask the clients you’re already working with for them. It’s the cheapest independent source and one of the ones models turn to most often. Duration: weeks · Difficulty: medium
04
Inclusion in the rankings Category rankings, business directories, comparisons. These are the ones are cited more frequently rather than the companies’ own websites. Time: months · Difficulty: high
05
Publications and presentations An article on an industry website, a podcast, a conference presentation. The slowest, but the most enduring. Time: months · Difficulty: high
The order is not random. The models first need confirmation that the company exists, and only then a reason to recommend it. The reverse order – that is, starting with a publication where the page is not visible – costs the most and yields the least.
Please note

What should you avoid doing when the AI isn’t familiar with the company?

Don’t promote your business to an influencer, don’t start with a blog, don’t buy mentions in bulk, and don’t expect results within a week. These four approaches cost either time or money and don’t change the outcome.
Don’t message the model asking them to add youThere is no such channel or form. It is not possible to get a reply report for correction like a directory entry.
Don’t start with a blogThirty articles on your own domain are no substitute for a single independent source. It’s simply adding to the same, single foundation.
Don’t buy mentions in bulkCatalogues with no activity and mass-generated entries are not cited by the models and are sometimes treated as an indication of low quality.
Don’t expect to see results within a weekEven after everything has been done, the model must encounter these sources again. It’s a matter of weeks, not days.
Date

How long does it take before AI starts replacing the company?

The first results are usually visible after a few weeks, whilst a consistent presence in the category takes a year or more. U lime manufacturer The brand appeared in 17 out of 18 responses after around five weeks, and the first recommendation it got after 11 weeks. The pace depends on the category, but the orders of magnitude are fairly stable. The Click Made graphic design studio had 86 blog articles in July and still 0% visibility, and one AI engine confused it with another company. We describe this in the article Off-site signals: what Click Made was missing in AI.
Weeks
Business cards, brochures, a revamped website. The business is starting to have the means to prove that it exists.
Months
Reviews, first mentions in lists. The brand begins to appear in some of the responses, usually first in a single model.
A year or more
A consistent presence in the category and citing one’s own domain. This is no longer about catching up, but about establishing a position.

This is just a rough guide. The actual rate depends on how saturated the category is and on how many sources your competitors have.

In this article, we explain why the results aren’t immediately visible, even after you’ve done everything Why aren’t the changes visible straight away?.
FAQ

Questions about lack of visibility

Questions that most commonly arise after the first test, which yields a negative result.
Does that mean my website is no good?

No. A website may be flawless, yet the brand still doesn’t appear because there are no signals from outside it. These are two different things.

Will writing a blog help?

Yes, but later on, once the model has something to back up the fact that the company actually exists. At the start, thirty articles on your own domain are still just one source, albeit a more comprehensive one.

Can I register a company with ChatGPT?

No. The models do not accept requests to add a brand to a response. The only way is through signals that the model identifies itself.

How can you tell if anything has changed?

To reiterate the same set of questions after a month. We explain how to do this in the article how to find out what AI says about a company.

The model is confusing my company with another one. Is this the same issue?

No. This is a situation where the model is familiar with the brand but has conflicting information about it. It usually stems from with a similar name or because there is no clear information about the sector and location on your website.

Will a Google business profile help with AI chats?

Yes, indirectly. A company profile is one of the first independent confirmations that a company exists, and Google itself states that a company’s visibility is demonstrated, amongst other things, by reviews and links from other websites.

Will the tool show me what my business is missing?

Yes. AI visibility tools show who the models mention instead of you and what sources they cite. On Aelo, you can start by Free accounts.
