How to choose keywords in Aelo
Key phrases are the topics on which Aelo checks whether AI chatbots mention your brand. For each phrase, the system generates questions that a customer might ask and puts them to four models: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. The results in therefore depend on which phrases you choose AI Visibility and tasks in Tickets.
In this article, we explain how many phrases you have in your plan, how to choose them and how to change them later.
How many phrases do you have planned?
Number keywords It depends on the plan and applies to a single brand:
- Free: 3 phrases (9 questions for the models),
- Starter: 6 phrases (18 questions),
- Pro: 12 phrases (36 questions),
- Custom: no limit.
Aelo prepares three questions for each phrase. This means that a single phrase explores the topic from several angles, rather than just one sentence. You can find a full comparison of the plans in pricing.
How to choose good phrases
Choose phrases that describe what your customer is looking for, even before they’ve heard of your brand. A good phrase:
- describes a category or a customer’s problem, for example, „invoicing system for a small business”, rather than the general term „invoices”,
- suits your range: if the model recommends someone in response to this phrase, you’ll want to be there too, and that person is usually your competition,
- is important for sales: start with the services and products that bring in the most money,
- does not include your brand name: we discuss this below.
With only three phrases included in the Free plan, focus on your most important service, your key product and the most common customer issue.
Why do the phrases not contain the brand name?
Aelo checks whether the model will mention your brand of its own accord when a customer asks about a category. That is why the questions in the scan are neutral: they do not contain the brand name. If the phrase did contain it, the model would always mention it, and the result would say nothing about whether the AI recommends you.
You can add a phrase containing your brand name yourself if you want to check what models are saying about your company. Bear in mind, however, that such a result does not show whether the AI recommends you to customers who do not yet know you. This is the basis of Aelo’s methodology: we measure visibility without the brand name appearing in the phrases. We describe what a neutral scan looks like in methodology.
How to choose phrases when adding a brand
When you complete the brand identity using the button Fill in identity with AI, Aelo suggests phrases based on your website. In the suggestions window, select the ones that matter most to you and click Save. This step is compulsory. We describe the entire process in the article How to add a brand in Aelo.

How to add and edit phrases later
You’ll find the phrases in brand identity, in the column on the right. You can:
- add the phrase manually using the button + Add keyword,
- generate new suggestions using the button New keywords (15 AC),
- Generate new questions for the scan by pressing the button New questions (10 AC).

Please note that we freeze the set of questions at the first scan. This allows you to compare subsequent measurements with one another. If you change the search terms, the new results will be calculated based on a different set of data, so compare them with the previous ones carefully.
How to measure several groups of phrases
One brand in Aelo corresponds to one set of phrases. If, for example, you want to track two product lines or two markets separately, add each group of phrases as a separate brand. Each of them then has its own results, tasks and report.
The number of brands depends on the plan: Free and Starter include one, Pro includes three. For a comparison of the plans, see our pricing.
FAQ
On the Free 3 plan, 6 on the Starter plan, 12 on the Pro plan, and unlimited on the Custom plan. The limit applies to a single brand.
You can add it yourself, but that’s not what the measurement is about. Aelo checks whether the model will mention your brand of its own accord when a customer asks about a category, which is why we measure visibility without the brand name in the search queries.
Yes, in the brand identity. However, the set of questions is ‘frozen’ after the first scan, so once you’ve changed the phrases, compare the results with the previous ones carefully.
Add each group as a separate brand. Each will have its own results and report.
