How to add competitors in Aelo

Competitors in Aelo are the companies against which we compare your brand in AI chat responses. Thanks to them, you can see in AI Visibility It’s not just whether the model mentions you, but also who they recommend instead of you and how often. This also forms the basis for some of the tasks in Tickets.

Below, we explain how to add a competitor, how many you should add, and how to edit the list later.

Where do you add competitors?

You add competitors in brand identity, in the section Competitors. You can open the ‘Identity’ section by clicking the cog icon next to the brand name in the brands menu, in the top-left corner of the panel.

For a new brand, the ‘Competitors’ section is one of the steps that follows selection keywords. We describe this in the article How to add a brand in Aelo.

How to enter a competitor

Expand this section Competitors and fill in the fields:

  • Competitor’s name (compulsory): as customers are familiar with it.
  • Domain (optional): a competitor’s website address, for example firma.pl. This helps to identify the competitor even if the model only provides a link.
  • Variants of the name (optional): abbreviations, alternative spellings or names without a legal form, i.e. aliases competitor. Thanks to them, Aelo won’t miss any mentions written differently.

You can add another competitor by clicking the button Add competitor. Changes are saved automatically.

How many competitors should I add?

Start with three to five companies that are actually competing with you for the same customers. It’s better to list a few relevant competitors than a long list of companies that simply operate in the same sector.

Good candidates are:

  • companies that customers compare you with before making a purchase,
  • brands that are already appearing in AI chat responses to your queries,
  • the leaders in your category, even if they’re bigger than you.

Not sure who to enter? After the first scan, check in AI Visibility, which brands and models are mentioned most frequently. This is often the best list of competitors.

What does Aelo use its list of competitors for?

  • Comparison of scan results: In AI Visibility, you can see how often the models mention you, and how often they mention your competitors.
  • Tasks: some of the tasks in Tickets It stems from what your competitors have and what you lack.
  • Advisors: Analyst compares you with the competition and explains the differences.

We explain in the article why models sometimes recommend others Why does AI recommend the competition?.

How to change your competitors

You can edit the list in the same ‘Identity’ section: correct details, add new companies or remove those that are no longer relevant. Changes take effect from the next full scan.

If you change the competitors, the comparison with previous months will relate to a different group of companies. You should therefore exercise caution when comparing results from different periods.

FAQ

Do I need to add competitors to run a scan?

No, but it’s worth it. Without any competitors, you’ll see whether the model mentions you, but you won’t find out who they recommend instead of you.

Is a competitor’s domain name essential?

No. Only the name is required. However, the domain and name variants help to identify mentions more accurately.

How many competitors should you add?

To start with, there are between three and five companies that are really competing with you for the same customers.

When will I see the results for the new competitor?

After the next full scan. Changes to the identity are saved automatically and carried over to the next measurement.
