Brand visibility in AI: what it is and how to measure it

Brand visibility in AI means that AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, mention your company of their own accord when a customer asks about your category but does not yet know your name. It consists of five layers: mentions, positions within responses, citations of your website as a source, recommendations and tone of the description. It is measured using a fixed set of questions put to several models, as the answers vary from query to query: in a study by SparkToro and Gumshoe.ai The chance of two identical lists of brands was less than 1 in 100. Good rankings on Google help, but do not guarantee a mention in the model’s response.

What does brand visibility mean in AI?

Brand visibility in AI means that the AI chatbot mentions your company of its own accord when a customer asks about your category but does not yet know your name. These days, some customers begin their search by chatting with an AI chatbot. They ask who can repair a boiler in Kraków, which invoicing tool to choose, or where to buy building lime, and the model responds with a list of several companies. Brand visibility in AI describes whether your company is on that list, where it ranks, and in what company it appears.
The most important thing is that the customer does not mention your name in their question, because they do not know it yet. If the model only mentions the brand when you ask about it directly, it means they recognise it. However, this does not mean that they show it to someone who is looking for it.
Actions that improve visibility in model responses are known as GEO, whilst writing content that the model can quote is known as AEO. We explain both concepts in our articles What is GEO? and What is an AEO?.

Components

What does brand visibility in AI consist of?

There are five layers: mentions, responses, page citations, recommendations and the tone of the description. A single figure hides too much. A brand may be mentioned frequently but never cited, or recognised but never recommended; that is why it is worth analysing each layer separately.

SEO and AI

How does brand visibility in AI differ from a ranking on Google?

A Google ranking refers to a website’s position in the list of links, whilst visibility in an AI refers to whether the model will mention your brand in its response. In a search engine, you’re competing for a place on the list of links, and the customer decides for themselves which one to click on. In the model’s response, there is no such list. The model summarises the topic and lists several brands, so the choice is made before the customer sees any website at all.
Good SEO helps because models that use search they choose pages that index well. Google describes this in its documentation on AI features in the search engine. SEO alone, however, is not enough: a company may rank highly on Google and still not appear in any of the model’s responses.
We illustrate this with an example in the article Visibility in AI and SEO, and we set out the differences between the approaches in A comparison of SEO, GEO and AEO. The basics of traditional search engine optimisation are described in the article What is SEO?.
What carries over from SEO
  • A page that search engine bots can crawl and index without any problems
  • Content in response to questions asked by customers
  • Structural data describing the company and its range of products and services
What SEO alone cannot achieve
  • Appearances in other people’s lists and category rankings
  • Reviews on the websites used by the models
  • A consistent description of the company across multiple independent sources
Mechanism

Where do AI chatbots get the brands they use in their replies from?

From two sources: knowledge gained during training and online searches carried out at the time the question is asked. The model does not rank companies; instead, it lists the brands where the risk of error is lowest.
What I learnt from the training sessionIt changes with the new version of the modelWhat the model read before it reached users: articles, catalogues, forums, company websites. A brand that was scarcely mentioned before training may not feature at all in this knowledge base.
Search at the time of the queryIt changes from one day to the nextChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity draw on the internet when they provide answers. What matters, then, is what they find today: your website, reviews, comparisons. Perplexity almost always displays its sources, so it’s the easiest way to see where the information comes from.
Our measurements show that, in both cases, independent endorsements are the deciding factor. If a competitor has reviews, listings and mentions in publications, whilst you only have your own website, the model will favour theirs. We discuss this in our articles Why does AI recommend the competition? and when AI doesn’t know your business. The answers also vary from one query to the next, as explained in the post Why does AI give a different answer every time?.
Measurement

How can brand visibility be measured in AI?

By asking several models the same set of questions about your category – without mentioning any brand names – and repeating the measurement at regular intervals. Only such a measurement can be replicated. Without these principles, the two results are not comparable.
  1. Ask about the category, not the brand. A question containing the company name tests brand recognition, not what the searching customer actually sees.
  2. Have a look at a few models. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity draw on different sources and mention different brands.
  3. Stick to a set of questions. Changing the wording alters the result, so you should only compare the same questions when they are asked again.
  4. Measure at a steady pace. A single result is just a snapshot of a moment. It is only the trend over the coming months that is significant.
  5. Save, who is being named in your place. And where does the model get its data from? This is what it’s based on list of activities.

The manual test takes about half an hour and is enough to get a one-off overview of the situation. You’ll find step-by-step instructions in the article how to find out what AI says about a company, and a shorter version in the post How to check whether AI recommends your brand.

Manual testing is no longer sufficient when you want to compare results over time, measure up against the competition, or show the result to the person responsible for the budget. People unconsciously alter the wording, and as a result the two measurements are no longer comparable. That is why at Aelo we work on frozen query set. We have compiled an overview of the available solutions in this article AI visibility tools, and the method for calculating each metric in methodology.

In this article, we explain why it makes sense to take a full measurement once a month rather than every day how often to measure visibility.
Activities

How can you improve your brand’s visibility in AI?

Work in three areas: on your own website, in external sources, and on a consistent company profile. It’s best to carry out these tasks in parallel, as the work on external sources takes the longest.
My own websiteThe result after a few weeksService names in the client’s language, specific details that can be quoted, structural data and access for model bots.
MoreThe model matches the brand to the customer’s enquiry. If a customer asks about a boiler repair and the website states „comprehensive heating system services”, the model will not link the two. They help structured data in the format Schema.org Organisation and checking that the robots.txt file does not block web crawlers such as OpenAI’s robots.
Sources outside this websiteThe result after several monthsReviews on independent websites, listings in trade directories, and inclusion in rankings and publications.
MoreIt is these sources that determine the recommendation. The model prefers to list a company that has been verified in multiple places rather than one that is only mentioned on its own website. A single entry in a category ranking can make more of a difference than several new blog posts. We describe this mechanism in the post How AI chatbots choose the brands they recommend.
A consistent description of the companyIt works all the timeThe same name, category and offer everywhere: on the website, on business cards, in catalogues and on social media profiles.
MoreIf a company describes itself differently in different places, the model may fail to combine these descriptions into a single brand, or may confuse it with another. This also applies to product names: a recognisable product is often associated with a category rather than with a manufacturer. We discuss this in the entry brand aliases.
A study by a team from Princeton and partner universities (GEO: Generative Engine Optimisation, 2023) showed that adding sources, quotations and figures to the content increased its presence in the responses of generative models by as much as around 40%. We set out in the article how long each stage takes in practice Why aren’t the changes visible straight away?.
Example

How does brand visibility in AI change in practice?

A family-run lime producer from the Łódź Voivodeship was not mentioned in any of the 18 questions about lime for construction and fertiliser in June 2026, despite having an extensive website. After five weeks of work on its own website, the models mentioned it in 17 out of 18 queries.
The recommendation only appeared in the third measurement. This clearly shows that the visibility layers increase at different rates. You can find a full description in case study of a lime manufacturer and in the post about the third measurement. We describe the latest results, with the website cited in all 18 queries, in the text on citations from the lime manufacturer’s website.

FAQ

Questions about brand visibility in AI

The questions we hear most often when someone checks their brand for the first time.
Is brand visibility in AI the same as GEO?

No. GEO refers to activities that improve a brand’s presence in models’ responses, whilst visibility is the metric used to measure the effectiveness of these activities. Read more in the article What is GEO?.

Is a high ranking on Google enough?

No. They do help, but the recommendations in the models’ responses are largely determined by sources outside your website: reviews, rankings and articles.

Why does visibility on AI matter if I’m getting traffic from Google?

Because some decisions are made based on the result itself, without even clicking. In a 2025 Pew Research study, Google users who were shown an AI summary clicked on the result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% of visits where no summary was shown. We discuss the data in the post Visibility in AI and SEO.

Can I check my brand’s visibility on AI myself, without using a tool?

Yes. Ask a few AI chatbots the same questions about their category, without mentioning the company name, and make a note of which brands are mentioned. You’ll find instructions in the article how to find out what AI says about a company.

Why does the model mention the competition rather than my company?

Because, when it comes to the competition, there are more independent endorsements. This is not an assessment of service quality. See the article for details Why does AI recommend the competition?.

How quickly can you improve your brand’s visibility on AI?

Changes to your own website usually become visible after a few weeks, whilst off-site signals take months to take effect. For the lime manufacturer, mentions appeared after five weeks, and the first recommendation came after 11 weeks. We explain this in detail in the article Why aren’t the changes visible straight away?.

Is it possible to guarantee that the model will endorse my brand?

No. Nobody controls what the model generates. You can increase the likelihood of a mention or a recommendation, and measure the change between successive measurements.

Which models are worth looking at?

At least ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, as everyone uses different sources and mentions different brands. We explain how we measure them at Aelo in methodology.

How can you measure brand visibility on ChatGPT?

Just as with other models: ask ChatGPT a fixed set of questions about your category, without mentioning any brand names, each in a new conversation or in a temporary chat, and note down whether your company appears and, if so, in which position. However, ChatGPT alone isn’t enough, as Claude, Gemini and Perplexity mention other brands. You’ll find the instructions in the article how to find out what AI says about a company.

How can you distinguish between questions about a brand and questions about a category?

Keep them in separate sets and count them separately. Questions without a company name show whether the model mentions you to someone searching within your category, whilst a question containing a brand name merely checks whether the model recognises the brand. The brand may be well known to the model but not appear in any category-related responses. We describe this distinction in the entry assessment and recommendation.
