Knows the brand, but doesn’t recommend it

The AI recognises the brand but does not recommend it when it correctly describes it in response to a question asking for its name, yet lists other companies when asked about its category. These are two different thresholds: diagnosis building your own website usually takes weeks, and a recommendation signals from outside it, i.e. reviews, round-ups and articles, usually published monthly. U lime manufacturer, which we have been measuring since June 2026; three out of four models were already familiar with the brand at the time of the first measurement, whilst one model only made their first recommendation after 11 weeks.

The phenomenon

What happens when an AI recognises a brand but doesn’t recommend it?

The same AI chat On the same day, it describes the brand correctly when you ask for it by name, and does not mention it when you ask about the category. The easiest way to see this is by looking at two questions.
Question containing a brand name

What do you know about [Your brand]?

Model response

Correct description: what it does, where it operates, and since when. Everything is correct.

Diagnosis works
Question about the category

Who does it? [service] in [city]?

Model response

Three other companies. Your brand isn’t there, even though the model knows it inside out.

No recommendations
This is neither a contradiction nor a flaw in the model. The answer to the first question is derived from what the model knows about the brand. The answer to the second question is derived from, how can he justify his choice this particular brand, out of the dozen or so in the category. Knowledge alone is not sufficient justification.
Distinction

How does a diagnosis differ from a recommendation?

Recognition depends on you, whilst recommendations depend on others: customers, the media and the compilers of the rankings. This explains the rest of the differences in the table.

Reason

Where does the line between diagnosis and treatment recommendation come from?

The fact is that having your own website only builds brand awareness. Working on it boosts brand awareness quickly: the model gains more and more information about who you are and what you do. After a few months, this curve flattens out, because the model already knows everything your website has to say.
The recommendation hardly changes at all during this time, because it is based on something else. The model needs a basis on which to choose you from amongst a dozen or so companies, and your own statement is not that basis. Nobody writes on their website that they are average.
This is precisely the moment when companies lose heart. They have done everything they could on their end, yet see no results. The results are there, however – just on a different curve.

Practical experience

What influences the recommendation once the AI is already familiar with the brand?

Customer reviews, rankings, and publications and presentations. They all have one thing in common: you can’t write them yourself on your own website. Someone else has to say them.
Customer reviewsThe cheapestIn places where models look: maps, trade websites, directories. Ask the clients you already work with for these.
Inclusion in the rankingsThe greatest leverageCategory rankings and company lists are sometimes quoted more often than the companies’ own websites. In the Wix Studio study, round-ups were the most frequently cited type of page in AI responses (21.9% citations), so being featured in one can boost your results more than further articles on your own website.
Publications and presentationsThe most durableAn article on an industry website, a podcast, a speech. They stick in people’s minds for years, and the presenter comes back to them in subsequent answers.
Working on my own website It is not a waste of time. Without it, the model has nothing to validate and will not even be able to build a model. It is all about the sequence and ensuring that we do not stop at the first stage. We describe the first steps in the article when AI doesn’t know your business. We show this with the example of a small graphic design studio in the article AI chatbot recommendations after 5 months: the Click Made case: in May all four AI engines knew the brand and one recommended it; in October three already did.
Diagnosis

How can you tell that an AI recognises a brand but doesn’t recommend it?

Based on these four indicators: the model accurately describes the brand but does not mention it in questions about the category; competitors are mentioned outside their own domain; and the result remains unchanged despite months of work on the content. If all these indicators match, continuing to write content for your own website will make little difference.
✓
The model accurately describes the brand when you ask directly He is familiar with the industry, the location and the range of services, Do not confuse it with another company.
✕
The brand does not appear in the category questions In none of the four models, for none of the queries Untitled.
✕
Competitors’ responses contain references outside their own domain Reviews, rankings, publications. You mainly have your own website.
✕
The result hadn’t changed after several months of work on the content Despite the new articles and updated subpages.

If all four match, the problem isn’t the content, but the lack of signals from outside your domain.

We explain how to check this for yourself in the article how to find out what AI says about a company. In the Aelo report This can be seen as a divergence between recognition and visibility in questions of category.
FAQ

Questions regarding diagnosis and recommendations

The questions we hear most often when a model is familiar with a brand but does not recommend it.
Will the other articles on the website help with the recommendation?

Not much, if the model already accurately describes the brand. A brand’s own website builds brand awareness, whilst recommendations are driven by reviews, rankings and articles. The exceptions are content gaps, i.e. questions from customers that the website fails to address at all.

How long does it take from diagnosis to treatment recommendation?

Usually months. For the lime manufacturer, the first recommendation appeared after 11 weeks, in 1 out of 4 models. We explain why it takes so long in the article Why do changes take time?.

What if a model knows the brand but speaks ill of it?

This is a different issue from the lack of recommendations: it concerns sentiment, that is, the tone in which the model describes the brand. We discuss this in the text What AI says about a brand’s shortcomings.

How can I find out if AI recognises my brand?

Ask the AI chatbot directly: „What do you know about [brand name]?”, in a new conversation. Then ask questions about the category without mentioning the brand name and compare the results, as described in the text How to find out what AI says about your business.

Does the absence of a recommendation mean that the model rates the brand more poorly?

No. The model does not compare the quality of services; instead, it looks for a reason to choose one brand from among a dozen or so, and sources outside your website provide it with that reason. Read more in the text Why does AI recommend the competition?.

What sources is this text based on?

  • Ahrefs: brand visibility factors in AI Overviews, 75,000 marks: the strongest correlations are between mentions of the brand (0.664), anchor text containing the brand name (0.527) and the number of searches for the brand (0.392) (May 2025).
  • Google: Business Profile help: A company’s visibility in local search results depends, amongst other things, on links from other websites and the number of reviews and ratings.
  • Search Engine Land: Wix Studio AI Search Lab study: lists are the most frequently cited format in AI responses (21.9% citations) (March 2026).
  • Aelo reports for Wapiennik „Węże” dated 24 June, 27 July and 10 September 2026 (published with the client’s consent): 3 out of 4 models identified from the first measurement; 0 out of 4 recommendations over two measurements and 1 out of 4 in September.
