When AI doesn’t know your business

Models mention brands that have a track record to back them up. If there is nothing about a company apart from its own website, the model has no grounds for mentioning it and will mention someone else instead. This is neither a penalty nor a mistake, but simply a lack of information.

Reason

Why is the model overlooking you?

The model constructs its response based on what it finds. If the only source of information about a company is its own website, it has just one source, and that source is a biased one. A competitor featured on an industry portal, on the other hand, has reviews in directories and appears in various rankings – it has more than a dozen of them.
When asked to select a category, the model must choose several names. It selects those where the risk of error is lowest – in other words, those confirmed in multiple sources. Your website cannot do this on its own, even if it is written flawlessly.
The good news is that this is a problem with the material, not with your reputation. Nobody has rejected you. There’s simply nothing to quote.
What does the model see when you ask about your category?
Competitor A
14 sources
Competitor B
9 sources
Competitor C
6 sources
Your brand
1 source

One source is usually your own website. The model treats it as a declaration rather than confirmation.

Diagnosis

The four most common reasons

Usually, several occur at the same time, but the first one accounts for the majority of cases.
No mentions outside its own domainThe most commonThe only information available about the company comes from its website. There are no reviews on independent websites, no listings in industry directories and no mentions in publications. The model relies on a single source, namely the company’s own website.
The website doesn’t explicitly state what you doFrequentBuzzwords instead of specifics, internally coined service names, and a lack of information about where and for whom you work. The model is unable to assign the company to the category the customer is asking about.
This category is already takenMore difficultIn this highly competitive category, models have their own established favourites with hundreds of mentions. Breaking into this group takes longer and requires signals that cannot be generated by content alone.
The brand is too newNaturalA company that has only been in business for a few months simply hasn’t had time to make its mark. This isn’t a problem to be fixed, but a period of time that needs to be worked through.
An exception is when a model is familiar with the brand but does not recommend it anyway. This is a separate issue, described in the article knows it, but doesn’t recommend it.
Order

What to do first

Listed from the quickest to the slowest. The first two steps can be completed in a week, and they’re usually what get things moving from scratch.
01
Business cards and catalogues The simplest and quickest step. The company’s profile on maps, in business directories and on review sites. The model receives its first independent confirmation that the company exists. Time: days · Difficulty: low
02
A website that tells it like it is The names of the services your clients use. The town and the area you cover. A description of who you work for. Specific details rather than buzzwords. Time: days · Difficulty: low
03
Customer reviews Ask the people you’ve worked with for them. It’s the cheapest independent source and one of the ones models turn to most often. Duration: weeks · Difficulty: medium
04
Inclusion in the rankings Category rankings, business directories, comparisons. These are often cited more frequently than the companies’ own websites. Time: months · Difficulty: high
05
Publications and presentations An article on an industry website, a podcast, a conference presentation. The slowest, but the most enduring. Time: months · Difficulty: high
The order is not random. Models first need confirmation that the company exists, and only then a reason to recommend it. The reverse order – that is, starting with a post when the website isn’t visible – costs the most and yields the least.
Please note

What not to do

Four actions that cost either time or money and do not change the outcome.
Don’t message the model asking them to add youThere is no such channel or form. It is not possible to submit a response for correction in the same way as a directory entry.
Don’t start with a blogThirty articles on your own domain are no substitute for a single independent source. It’s simply adding to the same, single foundation.
Don’t buy mentions in bulkCatalogues with no activity and mass-generated entries are not cited by the models and are sometimes treated as an indication of low quality.
Don’t expect to see results within a weekEven after everything has been done, the model must encounter these sources again. It’s a matter of weeks, not days.
Date

How long does it take?

The most common question following the first report. The answer depends on the category, but the order of magnitude remains fairly consistent.
Weeks
Business cards, brochures, a revamped website. The business is starting to have the means to prove that it exists.
Months
Reviews, first mentions in rankings. The brand starts to be criticised in some of the responses, usually beginning with a single model.
A year or more
A consistent presence in the category and backlinks to your own domain. This is no longer about catching up, but about building your position.

This is just a rough guide. The actual rate depends on how saturated the category is and on how many sources your competitors have.

FAQ

Questions about lack of visibility

The questions most commonly asked after the first test, which yielded a score of zero.
Why doesn’t ChatGPT know about my company?

Because there’s nothing to back it up. If the only source of information about a company is its own website, the model has just one source, and that is the company itself. It will list brands that are mentioned on several independent websites.

Does that mean my website is no good?

Not necessarily. A website can be flawless, yet the brand still fails because there are no signals from outside it. These are two different things.

Where should I start if I’m short on time?

From business cards and brochures to revamping your website so that it clearly explains what you do and where you operate. Both steps take days, not months.

Will writing a blog help?

It will help later on, once the model has something to prove that the company actually exists. At the outset, thirty articles on your own domain are still just one source, albeit a more comprehensive one.

Can I register a company with ChatGPT?

There is no such channel. The models do not accept requests to add a brand to a reply. The only way is through signals that the model finds itself.

How can you tell if anything has changed?

Repeating the same set of questions a month later. We explain how to do this in the article how to find out what AI says about a company.

The model is confusing my company with another one. Is this the same issue?

No. This is a situation where the model recognises the brand but has conflicting information about it. It’s usually due to a similar name or a lack of clear information about the sector and location on your website.
