Why does AI recommend the competition?

The model does not judge which is better. It lists the brands for which it finds the most independent endorsements. If a competitor has reviews, listings in rankings and mentions in publications, whilst you only have your own website, the model’s choice is a foregone conclusion before anyone has even compared the quality of the services.

Reason

This is not a quality assessment

The hardest thing to accept about this system is that the result has nothing to do with who performs better. The model hasn’t seen your work, hasn’t spoken to your clients, and hasn’t compared your service with that of a competitor.
He does something completely different: he checks which brand has the most independent corroboration, and lists those where the risk of error is lowest. That’s caution, not judgement.
That is why the statement „we do the same thing, but he stands out” is entirely justified and, at the same time, irrelevant. Visibility in these models measures something other than the quality of work.
What does the model compare when choosing brands?
It does not compare the quality of servicesThere’s no way to assess her. She hasn’t seen your projects, nor has she spoken to your clients.
It does not compare pricesPrices are rarely publicly available or comparable, and the model doesn’t want to get the figures wrong.
Compares the number of confirmationsHow many independent sources mention the brand, and how consistently they do so. That is the only thing it really measures.
He prefers brands he can’t go wrong withIt is safer to choose a company that has been verified in ten places than one that is known from just one.
Diagnosis

Five things your competitor has that you don’t

Listed in order of frequency. The first three account for most of the differences, and all three can be made up for.
01
It has reviews on sites that models read Maps, industry-specific websites, and directories with genuine traffic. It’s not about the number of stars, but about the existence of an independent record confirming that the business is operational. The most common difference
02
It’s on other people’s lists Category rankings, company directories, comparisons. Consumers tend to turn to these rather than the companies’ own websites, as they appear to be impartial. The greatest leverage
03
He names the services exactly as the customer asks His website says „gas boiler repairs”, whilst yours says „comprehensive heating system services”. The model adapts to the query, not to your jargon. The easiest to catch up on
04
He provides specific details that can be quoted Price ranges, deadlines, scope of work, terms and conditions. The model needs something it can quote as a response. Quick results
05
It runs for longer or is louder The longer you’ve been online, the more traces you leave behind. This is the only advantage that cannot be made up for in a few months, but it can be circumvented through narrow specialisation. The most difficult
Please note that this list does not include service quality, price or the team’s experience. Not because these factors are unimportant to the customer, but because the model has no way of assessing them.
Practical experience

Find out how you really differ

Take the two companies that the model listed instead of you, and work through the six lines. This is the quickest way to turn frustration into a to-do list.

It takes an hour to complete. The rows marked with a red „no” on your side and a green „yes” on your competitor’s side make up the final to-do list.

The report itself suggests who to list as competitors: these are the brands that the model mentioned in response to your enquiries. In Aelo, you can see them in the module Monitoring.

How to make up the distance

The final step is the most interesting: it’s often quicker to switch to a different category than to win the one in which you’re starting from tenth place.

MonthCollect feedback From clients you’ve already worked with. The cheapest independent source and the first one a model turns to.
QuarterGo to the rankings Get in touch with the authors of the rankings in your category. A single message can make more of a difference than ten articles.
Read moreNarrow down the category Instead of competing in the „construction companies” sector, aim for a niche specialism where there are three competitors rather than thirty.
Narrowing down a category is often underestimated. A model usually lists three to five brands, so in a narrow niche the barrier to entry is lower than in a general category. We explain how to measure this in methodology.
Please note

What not to do

Four reflexes that occur when you see a competitor in response.
Don’t tell the model that the competitor is worseThe model does not accept such requests and does not change its response based on its conversation with you.
Don’t copy a competitor’s websiteContent like this gives the model no reason to choose you over the original. The advantage lies outside the website.
Don’t buy reviewsEn masse posts are not cited, and review sites remove them, which can leave a more lasting mark than if they had never been posted at all.
Don’t compare yourself in every questionTyping in „competitor or us” simply checks whether the model recognises both names. The customer asks other questions.
FAQ

Questions about competition in the answers

The questions most commonly asked when you see someone else’s name in a report.
Why does the AI recommend the competition rather than me?

Because with the competitor, there are more independent endorsements: reviews, listings in rankings, and mentions in publications. This isn’t an assessment of service quality, but simply a choice of the brand with which the risk of making a mistake is lower.

We’re doing the same thing, yet he’s visible. How is that possible?

Visibility in the models measures something other than the quality of work. The model hasn’t seen your projects, so it relies on what others say about both companies.

Where should I start catching up?

Starting with the basics: business cards, brochures, service names in the client’s language and specific details on the website. That’s a week’s work. We describe the next steps in the article when AI doesn’t know your business.

Is it possible to catch up if a competitor has been in business for ten years longer?

In the general category, it’s difficult. It’s often more effective to narrow the focus: a narrow specialisation, where there are three competitors rather than thirty, has a much lower barrier to entry.

Can I report a competitor for making false claims?

Models do not have a channel for reporting incidents of this kind. The only way is through their own verifiable sources, which the model can cite.

How can I find out who’s taking my place?

By asking the models questions about a category without mentioning the brand name, and noting down the names they come up with. We explain how to do this in the article how to find out what AI says about a company.

The model knows my brand, yet still mentions a competitor. Why?

Because a diagnosis is not the same as a recommendation. We explain this difference in the article knows it, but doesn’t recommend it.

See who gets knocked out instead of you

You start with 250 AeloCoins, without a card. That’s enough to run a measurement and test the modules. Once you’ve used them up, you switch to a paid plan. Measurements work straight away, and a full report on your brand is included from the Starter plan onwards. You’ll see the names of competitors that come up in the responses.
